The Subaru of Jacksonville 22nd Annual Wavemasters Charity Surf Contest enjoyed perfect weather and great surf last weekend.  Over 200 of Florida's hottest pros and amateurs converged on the magic sandbars of the new Jax Beach pier to vye for cash and prizes worth over $10,000.00.  
Over $2,000.00 was raised for local charities through the beach raffle. For a $1.00 ticket, lucky winners took home thousand dollar surfboards by Surftech and Clay Bennett as well as Gravity skateboards, Ice Tech sunglasses, Billabong wetsuits and more.  
Despite predictions of flatness, good surf appeared out of nowhere and just got better all weekend.  Wavemasters members and contestants couldn't have been any luckier.  The contest ran smoother than ever with the help of local ESA tabulators and judges.  The addition of a Pro division really added an element of excitement.  It gave local amateurs the opportunity to compete against pros from around the state, raising the level of performance for the entire event.
With many valuable prizes at stake, the competition was serious in the water.  But back on land, it was a family affair and a 2 day beach party.
One family that dominated, to no one's surprise, was the Thompson Tribe of Jax Beach.  Tristan won Micros (9 and under) and Menehunes (12 and under).  Evan won boys (12 - 14) and Cody won Jr. Men (15 - 17).  With the help of their father, Hugh, who videotapes and photographs them, the brothers have become virtually unbeatable, earning them sponsorships from Sunrise Surf Shop and O'neill clothing of California.  
The Quintal family of Neptune Beach was also a dominant force.  Fifteen year old Justin won both the Jr. Longboard and Open Longboard, as well as 2nd place in Jr. Men.  Justin, the current East Coast champion, is surfing like a seasoned veteran.  He exemplifies the kind of sportmanship to which we should all aspire.
In the women's divisions, Tiffany Layton of Jax Beach defended her title by surfing like a pro.  Jessie Carnes, of JB won the Women's Longboard Division.  Jessie is the hottest young female from the area as a shortboard/longboard competitor.
The contest wound down around midday Sunday with the crowd pleasing Tandem event. Hundreds of spectators lined the water's edge as 3 teams battled it out to see which girl could ride the shoulders of her partner the longest.  It was defending champs Jason Motes and Erica Satterwhite taking home the gold.
Some of the charity receipients benifitting from this fundraising event will be  The Sea Turtle Patrol, The Carver Center, BEAKS and the Boys and Girls Club.
